  1. Are album names included? I rarely name or comment on photos, but almost always organize them into albums. Is this info automatically included in the comments, or could someone figure ut how to do so?

  2. I’m not sure I’m that familiar with Automator, so perhaps that’s my problem, but presumably this is arranged with a 1) Get Specified iPhoto Item, 2) Makie iPhoto4 Image spotlightable way. In this case, it’s a shame it cannot seem to understand a library or folder, but insists on them being selected individually in the ‘Get Specified…’ dialog.

Oh, and it’s currently working on a selection of 37 images and has been over 5 minutes already. Seems a lot (I’m going for lunch now – if it’s still going when I get back, I’ll be very worried).

  3. hm… doesn’t seem to work for me.

forgive me as this is my first use of automator, but the steps are:
    -create a new workflow
-“get selected iPhoto items” as first item
-add this action as second item

then run the workflow? or add a third item such as import back to iphoto? what?

    cause neither seems to work,
With just those two actions, it runs and completes, but the spotlight comment field remains blank and it doesn’t find them when searching on a word in the current iphoto comment
Get an error from iphoto if i try to add “import to iphoto”

    (using iphoto 4.0.3)

  4. Sorry about it not understanding an album selection. I’ll probably add that in soon.
The slowness is because it has to ask iPhoto for everything via applescript. Not much I can do about that (I think).
As for album names… well, a photo could appear in multiple albums, so I would have to ask iPhoto for all albums that each image is contained in. This would be even slower.

Ultimately the best solution would be for apple to add a spotlight plugin/support for iPhoto4.

  5. Hey Adam.

Just did the same thing, and first I thought that Automator wasn’t working properly…

Tried it on less images then, and it takes roughly about 45 seconds per image… (I have about 3000 images… ouch).

Is this normal that it’s taking so long? If yes, then Apple wins, as I’ll probably have to get Ilife ’05.

  6. Hi.

For me it only takes about 5 seconds to process around 5 images. 1.5GHz powerbook. I also have around 300 images.
Strange that it is so slow on your machine.

    I’ll look into it later.

  7. Well, seems we’re both using the same machine then. Does it have anything to do with the file size? My images are about 2 Mb a piece.

I’ll give it a try with less big files and keep you posted.

  8. I have the same problem as axcess99. It has not added them to spotlight results. Am I doing all the steps? I’m doing the same two that he is.

Can someone post or mail and let me know?

  9. Doesn’t work for me either. I have a mixed iPhoto library, most of it was made with iPhoto 4 and a small part with iPhoto 5. It doesn’t work regardless of the iPhoto version era of the photograph. Can you please, please give us the exact workflow steps in case we are missing something? (Mine is: Get selected iPhoto items -> Make selected iPhoto images Spotlightable).

This seems like exactly what I need for my library, if only I could make it work :-)

  10. I have found a solution for the problem at the following address:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-121968.html

I did what “adam1185” proposed and it worked flawlessly (in iPhoto 5.0.2, haven’t tried it in 4):

    1. Select any photographs you need to have Spotlighted.
    2. Do a Command & I to bring up their details.
    3. Assign a dummy keyword (you can create one just for this purpose).
    4. There is no 4! Spotlight should have caught the change and indexed all the photographs with every pre-existing keyword. You can now remove the dummy keyword if you like.

Anyway, thank you Nick for the effort, it was seriously worthy.

  11. This Action works correctly, but you have to make sure you have the photos you want commented selected in the iPhoto thumbnail view first.

  12. Thank you! This is a great little action, it worked like a charm.

It’s too bad that workflows can’t be saved as iPhoto plugins… oh well.

    Keep up the good work!
