Merge Files
**Function:** Merges the selected files (or folder contents) into the selected destination folder. The files are moved, *not* copied.

**Notes**: *Moving* files as opposed to the generally safer *copying* was chosen in this instance, because merge functions of this type tend to be applied to large volumes of files, where copying would be inefficient. This Workflow is saved as an application.

I was excited to see this automator. Tested it on two small folders that only had files in them. Then tried to use on folders with files and subfolders within the main folder. It moved out all of the files within the subfolders into the new folder without moving the enclosing folder itself. So, I ended up with a bunch of empty folders in the source folder and a bunch of files not in any folders at the destination folder. Too bad. I had high hopes that someone finally worked out a merge feature for the Mac.

Merging files from various source folders into one single folder is the whole point of this workflow. If you want to merge folders maintaining the original subfolders, all you need is “Get selected finder items” then copy or move them to the new folder.

I’ve used the script to combine my pdf files but I can not find the combined file? Can I specify it’s location or does it default to somewhere?

What if you want to combine, for instance, two itunes music folders? Some of the subfolders have the same title but different contents. I want to retain the subfolders but merge the contents of each rather than replace one with the other. I have been trying hard to figure out how to do this with automator. Any ideas? Thanks.
