I know this is a really old post, but I found while searching for a way to get Automator to prompt the user the enter a filename (as per comment 11). Although I'm using version 2.0.2, which looks a bit different, here's how to do it. Select "Options" in the "Rename Finder Items" action and check the box next to "Show this action when the workflow runs". Finally figured it out!

Can you add a way to prompt for the user to enter a filename?

Do you have an action that will rename a set of files based on a string pattern? I wish to do a batch rename so that the files are sorted by date, so that Feb0607. becomes 070206. Note that this requires a lookup table to determine that Feb = 02.

[...] In Automator out-of-box there is no action to simply rename a file. There is one to rename a bunch of files, and add dates, prefixes, etc., but absolutley nothing that can simply rename a single file. Luckily I found the Rename Finder Item (not to be confused with the built-in “Rename Finder Items”) action. You can pick it up at http://www.automatorworld.com/archives/rename-finder-item/ [...]
