**Function:** Stores the filename of a document in its Spotlight Comments field for later retrieval.
**Author**: [Ben Long](http://www.completedigitalphotography.com/)
**Input**: Files or Folders
**Output**: Files or Folders
**Notes**: Stores the original file name of a document in the document's own Spotlight Comments field, so that you can retrieve it later using the Restore Original Name action. This can be particularly handy for digital photographers who want to rename their image files with more meaningful titles, but don't want to lose track of the original camera-generated names.
Are these two workflows Finder workflows (for the contextual menu), drag the file and drop onto them or what? How does one use them?
Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi ChemBob, this is an action not a workflow. So, to use it, you need to add it to an Automator workflow. For example, drag the files whose names you want to store into an empty Automator workflow, then drag the Store Original Name action below it. Then run the workflow and it should save your filenames.

Ben, thanks! I should have been able to figure that out myself but for some reason I didn’t. Too much blogging maybe, LOL.

is it possible to drop a file into a smart folder and have that file be tagged with the folder name – the folder name being placed in the spotlight comment? If so. how would I create such a thing?

any chance of getting the source code for this action, or a new version that removes the “original name>” text.
Thanks,
Z.
