Installing Actions and Plug-ins

Actions should be installed in either: /Library/Automator/ or ~/Library/Automator/. Create the "Automator" folder if it doesn't exist. They will appear in Automator under the appropriate application name.

If you want a workflow to appear as a contextual menu item for the Finder, copy it into ~/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder/ (create the folders if they don't exist). The workflow will appear immediately in the contextual menu in the *Automator* sub-menu.

Workflows can also be saved directly as plug-ins from the Automator *File > Save As Plug-in..."* menu item.

  1. Can anyone explain what the /Library/Application Support/Apple/Automator/Workflows/Applications/ folder is used for? It appears to be the “official” location for workflow file placement, maybe this changed for OS X 10.4.1?
